Sonntagssüß – Red Sunday Sweetness

Strawberry & Ginger Marmelade

Hello everyone,

as you may have seen over at sisterMAG-Blog I haven't taken a break from blogging, it has just moved a little to our other blog during the last days, because I HAD to share the details from the conference "The Hive 2012" (European Blogger Conference) which took place in Berlin (Betahaus) last weekend. It has taken a few days to digest and blog about all the details. Today the last post came up with a few pictures of the goodies we had produced for the goodie bags: little paper notepads (Blogger Pads), which you can now also buy from our Dawanda shop. Be sure to check them out, they are quite handy (have used them myself in the last week!) and we ship internationally. The first one is already on its way to India.

I actually wanted to participate at "Initiative Sonntagssüß" again – the blogger series which I've talked about before. On the weekend I was not only able to meet Frl. Text again, but also Julie from mat&mi. I really loved talking to her and we found out that we have quite a few interests in common ;). Hope to see you again very soon!!

Strawberry & Ginger Marmelade

So, what's the Sunday Sweet today? No cake but a strawberry-ginger-marmelade. It wasn't made after any recipe but more what my mom thought would be best (that's always the case with marmelades, which is why we had the craziest combinations on our breakfast table). Ginger is such a great "spice" adder, you will definitely see a lot more of it in the next weeks here.
We always use jam sugar, which you mix 1:3 (1 part sugar to 3 parts fruits, in order to get a less sweeter jam). This time is it only fresh strawberries with a good sized piece of ginger. The special kick it however gets from adding sparkling water!

Strawberry ginger jam

  • 500 ml sparkling water
  • ca. 800 g strawberries
  • citric acid
  • 3 cm piece ginger, cut in small pieces
  • 1 bag 1:3-jam sugar

First mix 700 g strawberries, ginger, sparkling water and citric acid in a mixer. Chop rest of the strawberries into small piece (if you want to have pieces in your jam) and add to the puree. Mix with jam sugar and cook following the instructions on the bag. Fill into jars, close lids and let them cool standing upside down. Eat for breakfast ;)

Many greetings and hope to hear from you!
Yours, Thea

Strawberry & Ginger Marmelade

Eure Thea

Lilac & Blue - Outfit

Hello everyone,

another crazy time of layouting and putting together sisterMAG 2 lays behind me and today I finally found a minute to sit down and write another post for Neu4bauer! What a relief that it is now ALL done and we've even finished the iPad app, the browser version will be once more updated in the next days and Toni and I are all ready to attend "The Hive – European Blogger Conference" this weekend in Berlin. What an interesting and exciting time, loads of people I/we get to meet through this magazine and we are constantly searching for inspiration, insights and interview partners.

For the most of the time my absence of "style posts" is due to my latest way of living. Spending weeks in your flat, working from 9am - 2 am doesn't spark interesting outfit ideas. HOWEVER for this second issue I actually tried to dress accordingly to my design scheme. My very first step (in mid April) was to abandon all dark colors and dresses to the storage area. My colour-coordinated clothes rack got a spring renewal.
Spring Wardrobe
Because of the theme of the new issue ("Blossoming new beginnings") I decided to go with pastel blossom colours: light blue and green, a lot of yellow and apricot. It started with the cover, where we made a whole dress embellished with pastel paper roses (I'll compose a post about the creation of this dress over at sisterMAG blog soon). And it just followed through all the section pages, the table of content right to the last page. Luckily my mom loved these colours as well, which is why I found myself left with a pale lilac pleated skirt. On a lonely Sunday I therefore decided that my workday needed a little elegance. Hence my outfit ;).

Outfit: Lilac & Blue [1] Pleated skirt – Neu4bauer, pleats made by Plissé Kliss | [2] White blouse – Neu4bauer (love this pattern with the high collar! I absolutely robbed this blouse from my mom) | [3] Blue cardigan – MANGO | [4] Peep-toes – bought in a little fashion store in Capri

I hope you are not mad with me for being quiet for such a long time! As always you can find Neu4bauer-Thea in other places as well: sisterMAG (Issue 2 is live and we'll be adding a few blog posts over the next weeks) and IKEA Family Live (just published a new post about the sideboard in my family's home).

Have a lovely day and talk to you soon. Yours, Thea

Lilac shoes and pleated skirt by Neu4bauer

Hallo!

Eure Thea

Draped skirt with African-London influence!

Burberry inspired skirt

Since you've seen the leopard print shoes already and I got some very nice remarks about those, I wanted to show you another outfit I wore them with. I call it: "pattern overload" ;). The shoes – I think I mentioned it before – are a treasure from my London visit in January. I bought them on sale (130something£ -> 40£) at Urban Outfitters, which is a shop I hardly ever find something. The blouse and skirt are made by Neu4bauer. The blouse – dark blue, sleeveless and with Velcro instead of buttons – is terribly old. My mom once made it after a Prada inspiration (that's probably 10-13 years ago!). I love it so much that my mom has repeatedly failed in talking me to bin this blouse *hehe*.
The skirt is made from the sisterMAG tutorial (okay, the other way round: WE made the tutorial for this skirt FOR sisterMAG ;). I bought the fabric in the most peculiar area of London's fabric mile: Shepherd's Bush. The sellers are very, very nice but you know that they are not taking you seriously. However I do think that they liked me quite a bit because I walked out of the tiny shop with over 15 metres of African fabric!
From the three fabrics I got from London this light beige one with orange and black print is my favourite one. You may have seen it over at anders-anziehen.blogspot.com, when I wore this skirt at IMM Cologne.

The best thing when making these skirts: none of them is like the other! Since you are draping and shaping each piece of fabric separately you won't even be able to reproduce a draping you liked. My favourite details: the inlay which was a fabric my family bought as new curtains for my sister's appartment. They hated it! Now we have metres and metres left and my mom uses it for lining skirts and dresses ;). And I love the transparent orange button – vintage!

Burberry inspired skirt

Which brings me to the most important question: why African prints? Well, this is probably the fault of Christopher Bailey who designed the most precious collection for Burberry spring 2012. I love the belts, the trenches, the skirts … however all items are so ridiculously expensive that you fall off your chair ;). A wrapped skirt like this ranges at 1495€.
Thus a collage full of products which remind me of Burberry's collection and all in a more bearable price range PLUS many from Etsy and independent sellers!

Have a lovely evening! Yours, Thea

Was mich zur wichtigsten Frage bringt: warum afrikanische Muster?

Eure Thea

glugg glugg … an invitation to print

Invitations with *glugg*

As long as I can remember my family has asked me for event decoration (and this is the case with real and hostfamilies ;). They know how I work: at first I am quite bummed about the task, have no ideas at all, procrastinate til the last second and in the end I will pull an all-nighter if I have to. This time it was again like this. The task: to make an invitation for a birthday lunch at an Italian restaurant. Quite a sophisticated crowd to invite and age-wise a little older than I am. I didn't have an idea for a long time and what rescued me again for the probably 200th time? Pinterest of course! I found a square card with this cute idea: a wine bottle on page 1 and a glass of wine on page 2, hinged together at the top. I then changed the design completely to be a little less cute and flowery and changed the dimensions of the card. The cards are printed on 300g heavy watercolour cardstock, the envelope is made out of really old vintage paper.

Invitations with *glugg*

Because I already designed the whole thing and won't use the design again I thought it would be nice to give you the PDF of the card. You can download and use it, open it with Illustrator and edit the vector file or change the colours as you want! The text for the invitation I printed on the back of the second card. Enjoy!

A new chapter | Ein neues Kapitel

ENGLISH | DEUTSCH

neues-kapitel

Another long period of no-blogging has passed at Neu4bauer (I know I know, it is ennoying!) and today I want to give you a real and honest update about life at Neu4bauer. Somehow today feels like a real new beginning. There were a lot of paths to go, a lot of decisions to make and hurdles to take. Tomorrow probably will be a very normal day without highs or lows, this is why I want to use this post to mark a "starting point".

A lot of things happened: the launch of sisterMAG was definitely a new beginning. However with going public the trembling and waiting only began. Although we were expecting good things and had high hopes we never knew whether the theoretical concept of our magazine would work and appeal to people. Today – about a month after launching – we look astonished at the number of over 58.000 readers and are happy about such positive response.
Naturally – and I do want to emphasize that – there is criticism as well! It is important and as long it is conceptionally helps on improving, I do love to hear and discuss. The one or the other remark however does hit you personally and it has been quite a hard school of knocks for such a self-critical and contemplative person. Luckily I have found – also through sisterMAG – enough friends and people who encourage one.

And then there are times when a lot of developments hit you and decisions have to be made in just one day. I've never mentioned it on the blog but about 9 months ago I applied for a scholarship named Fulbright. The process was incredibly long, I had to write a lot of statements, undergo tests and take interviews with the prospect of studying in America. In the end I did get nominated but decided about 10 days ago not to go. A lot of different reasons have led to this move. Not an easy decision to take – even when talking to your family and a best friend. Honestly: I have studied long enough. sisterMAG is very dear to my heart and I don't want to leave it or do it half-time for 10 months. I am sure by that time we would see 10 other amazing and great magazines.

Some of you might know that sisterMAG is the end product of my diploma thesis. I had written, poorly formatted and handed it in already in December 2011. For all this time I was procrastinating or better waiting for my defense, which finally took place today in the morning. I have never been a huge fan of academic writing. My texts are always a little to casual and full of words like bluster and bloom. Furthermore I found some horrible form mistakes in my thesis afterwards. The defense therefore was hard and honest. The end result lets me rest enourmously relieved. I am not overly content (and my mom will hit me when she sees me the next time and read this) but I am happy – isn't it paradox?

Thus I wait for my final results, plan my relocation (probably in July) and work at issue 2 of sisterMAG. You see: everything stays the same but at the same time all plans and positions have randomly changed.

From tomorrow you'll find again more shallow, less wordy posts full of dresses, colours and flowers. In the last weeks I ruminated about the question whether this fact is somehow negative. The criticism to produce high gloss or the statement I looked quite superficial left me looking down at my pink polyester-cotton dress paired with glossy loafers and question myself. However I deepheartedly dissent the connection "pretty = dumm" (in any case, whether it is interior design, pretty cupcakes or "styling"). When researching pastel-coloured dresses and looking for new photoshop actions to create nicer skin colours I can still listen to the reports about the developments in Syria, can't I? But how should I dress and look like to convey this?

After these nerve wracking days I will now dedicate my time to the wonderfully mundane things of life: cleaning, working off clients wishes, answering emails and sleep! Good night!

P.S. And for all of you who love this info: I wore these crazily high, but also very comfortable shoes ALL day today! You might know them from the sisterMAG shooting p.227. Shoes: Urban Outfitters, coat: Peek & Cloppenburg

neues-kapitel2

Mantel: Peek & Cloppenburg.

Song to listen to when reading this post – found via the new ASOS Fashion Video for Spring 2012 with Lea

Magazines on German newsstands

  1. Madame – I want exactly that hairdo ... I just think my hair won't stay that sleek ;(!! Curls all over! |
  2. LIVING AT HOME – Very spring-like and colourful! And with a great article about Bastis Rike, who is a German photographer/blogger/stamps-maker with sooo much talent (check out her shop for sure!) |
  3. And last but not least the Laviva - a quite cheap women's magazines I actually picked up at the supermarket line. Why?! I found two blogger friends in there: Susanne S. (la-petite-cuisine.blogspot.com) with a beautiful food feature and Susanne G. from cherrypinkpurple! |

Fonts I loved recently
A little while back I already told you about the wonderful font "Strangelove" and recently I discovered another great selection of handwritten fonts over at snippet & ink (great blog!). I found myself spending more and more money on digital goods like fonts or Photoshop actions and brushes, but I can tell you: it feels right! And I use them almost more often than the tenth pair of sandals! My three favourites (two of them even are free):

  1. EMILY LIME – A real bargain at $29: 8 fonts are in the package with a lot of beginning and end swishes (you can see it above in the Breakfast Picks Picture and I'll probably use it ALL the time for sisterMAG issue 2 ;)) |
  2. Picture 12 WISDOM SCRIPT – Although free I donated a little something to James T. Edmondson last year. I was SO surprised when I found an email in my mailbox with a Thank-you-note – an actually DRAWN Thank-You-Note. Isn't that sweet? It makes you feel allright about donating and supporting designers! |
  3. MATILDE – A real girls' font, Matilde! And it comes with a package of .eps files full of badges and swung emblems. Sometimes I am just thrilled what you can find when browsing through the WWW!
Toll! Ich bin immer wieder begeistert, was man alles so findet! ❤

Colour inspiration blogs

  1. Color Collective – not only a fashion inspiration but always a good ressource for unusual colour combinations!
  2. Lovely Clusters – the pretty blog sharing beautiful collages, products ... and colours!
  3. A favourite among the plattform's blogs (which can be quite boring sometimes). However the blog from COLOURlovers is full of colours, trends and colour combinations and you can see a lot of research going into

Modern times

The right music when reading this post:

Although even I sometimes get a little nervous with all these different digital media channels and stuff going on, I must say how much I love the digital life and friendship going on right now. All the different Social Media Platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, sometimes Path, sometimes Instagram … they all lead to an almost seemingless communication with friends and family, acquaintances and strangers. Looking at the numbers today I cannot believe what we've only done in one week! The German issue of sisterMAG has 23710 single views, the English one 4482 views (so all English readers: please do share and tell and look and click ;) – it is just a little unbelievable that so many people have clicked on our (not so little) magazine so many times! And the feedback we've been receiving was so warm and positive. Thank you! The words which were critical were also appreciated and we are working on ideas to make the next issue even more accessible and fun to read.

Nevertheless, at times you have to take a step back, take a break and just wander around the city. That's what I did today. The weather was wonderful, I met a dear friend for breakfast and took a long walk home: set out for a bit of competitor's analysis and bought print magazines (I DO support them ;), got myself a tray of semi-quality, ridiculously expensive Sushi and took some pictures. Nothing special, no shooting material, nothing to use for sisterMAG and that felt really nice for a change!

briefkasten

What are you looking forward in spring? I really like the feeling of going jogging with only one layer underneath! I love that the colours are getting more vibrant again. I like the smiles on everybody's faces as soon as the sun lurks behind the clouds. AND: I love that I don't have to buy washing detergent for my car's windshield every 100 km *hihi*!!

Yours, Theresa
