Hello everyone,
just a few greetings from the island 'Malta' where Toni and I are spending a few days to escape the German frostiness! The island presents itself as a funny and exotic mix of English shops and architecture with a lot of oriental influences! It will be really interesting to discover the food, places and sights here! Very typical for us sisters: the morning walking route. I decided to go to the right and Toni and I found ourselves on the arterial road of Malta ;). We were not THAT thrilled about the shops and sceptical people staring at us in jogging clothes. However we later on found the oldtown of Valletta and were reconciled with the island ;)!! Today we already had a funny little tour through an 'interactive' museum about the great siege of Malta of 1565. So Toni and I learned that the Maltese were a reason that the Ottoman Empire was hindered on invading Europe (see the whole article on Wikipedia here).
A few insights from our first day: 'fig conserve' at Café Jubilee is more like fig glue paste (I have never ever experienced such gooey and gummy jam ;), Malta in February is not especially warm even if the sun is shining and when walking through the main shopping street of Valletta you sometimes have the feeling as if you are in an oriental London (with shops like Accessorize, Dune and Marks&Spencer one after another).
A very very positive surprise was our hotel Phoenicia where Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth have stayed several times (e.g. in year 1949). You enter through a large reception room and in the main hall (where we are sitting right now) you may sip a cup of tea and enjoy a scone or chocolate cake!!

Hallo an alle,
nur einige kurze Grüße von der Insel 'Malta' wo Toni und ich einige Tage verbringen, um der Kälte in Deutschland zu entkommen. Die Insel präsentiert sich als ein ganz interessanter und exotischer Mix aus englischen Einflüssen, Geschäften und Architektur mit scheinbar unpassenden südländisch-orientalischen Einflüssen gemischt. Wir freuen uns schon, diese interessante Mixtur von Essen, Plätzen und Sehenswürdigkeiten in den nächsten Tagen zu erkunden!
Sehr typisch war allerdings unsere morgendliche Laufrunde. Meiner (!) Eingebung folgend liefen wir nach rechts und fanden uns auf der Stadtausfallsstraße wieder. So ganz begeistert waren wir nicht ob der skeptisch dreinschauenden Männer und Jüngelchen, als wir in forschen Joggingklamotten entlang der geschlossenen Geschäfte entlangrasten. Wenigstens fanden wir danach die Altstadt von Valletta und waren wieder mit der Insel versöhnt. Heute besuchten wir schon eine sehr niedliche Ausstellung zum Thema der 'Großen Belagerung Maltas' im Jahr 1565. Also lernten die Neu4bauer-Schwestern heute, dass viele zähe Malteser die Ottomanen damals hinderten, über Europa auf dem Seeweg herzufallen (der ganze Artikel auf Wikipedia hier).
Einige Mini-Eindrücke: Feigenkonfitüre im angepriesenen Café Jubilee schmeckt mehr wie Feigenkleber (ich habe in meinem ganzen Leben noch nie solche feste und klebrige Marmelade gegessen!), Malta ist im Februar nicht wirklich warm obwohl die Sonne scheint und Valletta kommt einem in den Geschäftsstraßen ein wenig wie ein in den Orient verirrtes London vor (mit Läden wie Accessorice, Dune oder Marks&Spencer aufgereiht hintereinander).
Eine sehr schöne und positive Überraschung ist unser Hotel Phoenicia – wo schon Prinz Philip und Prinzessin Elizabeth im Jahr 1949 übernachtet haben. Man betritt es durch eine große Empfangshalle mit Concierge und in der großen Haupthalle kann man in riesigen Sofas und Sesseln neben WLAN eine Tasse Tee schlürfen oder einen Scone genießen.
