Preciosity is the antonym of grace – Kleist in Berlin

Preciosity is the the antonym of grace.

One reason to love large cities is the - what I call it - "district hopping", which you can only do in metropolises. When waking up in the morning, you do not know where you'll go, what you'll see, who you'll meet and which museum you will discover. In my opinion (and this is just personal and highly debatable) this lifestyle only works in cities from a certain grandeur.

A wonderful and unexpected adventure I had again in Berlin. After a short telephone call I was off and about on my bike heading to Alexanderplatz. Then we walked to the "historical" Nikolaiviertel. A really cold November day with trails of smoke in front of our faces, a blue blue sky and really … when we walked past the "Red City Hall" the whole atmosphere changed. It felt provincial and small-town and only the television tower in the near distance reminded us of the rough metropolis.

The most wonderful thing of this day however was the museum my friend had picked (and you can always be sure about the quality of his choices): "Kleist – crisis and experiment" in the lovely Ephraim-Palais. One of the methodically best exhibitions about a classical poet (Kleist) – recommendable! What makes a literary exhibition special? The description texts (in German and English) were really interesting and never too long – I even took notes because they were witty and smart. The installations were breathtaking! My favourite pieces: the white table full of painted books, the book case full of grey folders and when you walked along the shelves there were voices whispering, a video installation with text pieces of my favourite book of Kleist {Michael Kohlhaas} with current pictures and modern typography or the life-sized wooden book with the letter communication between Goethe and Kleist (and they were NOT good friends, rather enemies).

Afterwards we indulged ourselves with an Italian nougat praliné at Pure Origins before I had to get back to my math review for Wednesday (GRE :()

Kleist - Krise und Experiment
Fernweh ist ganz das Gegenteil von Heimweh. Der Heimwehkranke weiß, wonach er sich sehnt. … "Ich komme, ich weiß nicht, von wo? Ich bin, ich weiß nicht, was? Ich fahre, ich weiß nicht, wohin? Mich wundert, daß ich so fröhlich bin."
Wanderlust is really the complete opposite of homesickness/nostalgia. The nostalgist knows what he longs for …

Was macht nun eine literarische Ausstellung so interessant?

P.S. Do you think I look like Margot Honecker?? I was told that just the other day … can you believe that – quite insulting, I think ;) !?

Theresa, since you are reading my comment so attentively ;-), I will pay attention to read myself over before clicking on send. Your post reminded me the year I lived in Europe. A year during which I spent 8-10 hours a week learning German. If I understand correctly, your so poetic citation, it goes like this: "I am coming, and, I do not know from where? I am, but I do not know, what? I am driving, but I do not know, in which direction ? I am surprised to be so happy." As for Margot, please do not compare your self to a 84 year-old woman. She might have been a nice looking lady in her twenties who knows. The pictures I find are all terrible. Plus, she was married to a terrible man. Do not pay attention to those comments. Original, well spoken, energetic and nice looking woman like you often attract stupid comments from envious souls. Be ready for that ;-))) Shield your self against it.
